So, I’ve decided to become a pescetarian, which is a vegetarian who also eats seafood. For lent this year I gave up all meat, and it was actually pretty easy. Except sushi!
I have long felt that how modern-day America treats animals raised as food is wrong. Gone are the days of farm-raised livestock treated humanely in life and death. Thanks to the insatiable gluttony of far too many people in this country, slaughter now often comes at the mechanical hands assembly lines designed for speed and maximum output, not painlessness.
My dad once said “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.” I feel like that’s probably pretty accurate. I know how modern slaughterhouses work–I know speed is valued far above humane treatment and painless killing. I know too much to pretend like it’s not disturbing and wrong. I don’t think it’s right that from day one these animals aren’t seen as life, they’re seen as a product to cram into cages and inject with hormones. Efforts aren’t made to give them a good life, but there’s rarely hesitation to utilize technology that will maximize profits from their slaughter. This is far from a natural process anymore, and I can’t buy into it.
So I decided to put my money where my mouth is. I’m making this decision in part to diminish the feelings of heart-wrenching shame whenever I pass a pig truck on the freeway. I’m not sure whether I feel worse when the truck is full and I know the fate that awaits the lives inside, or when the truck is empty and its dark spaces stare silently out at me.
And why not seafood? I’m still researching this one–I’ve heard anecdotes here and there on both sides of the issue. Anybody care to weigh in?
